UPDATES

START OF FALL SEMESTER

  • Parking
  • A 15-minute parking sign for parking on Loring Avenue in front of the Horace Mann School has been replaced. The space from the Linden Street crosswalk to the right-turn-only lane onto Lafayette will be designated “No Parking” in order to help traffic flow for safe use of crosswalk.  This will eliminate approximately two parking spaces.
  • Exploring short-term (two-hour) parking on Lafayette Street from Loring Avenue to the Salem State College library.  It was suggested that short-term parking be extended along Lafayette Street beyond the library to the Marblehead border.
  • Similar all-day parking issues on Lafayette Street were from Loring Avenue north
  • Loring Avenue from Harrison Road to Jefferson Avenue is state parking. This is a state highway issue.
  • The saw horses located on Lafayette Street and Naples Road have prevented parking thus far this semester.
  • Traffic
  • The crossing guards stationed at the Linden Street crosswalk on Loring Avenue near the Sullivan building appear to ease traffic.
  • It was suggested that traffic lights along Loring Avenue toward Canal Street be synchronized. The college will direct Campus Police to contact the state highway district office and the city will contact the state as well.
  • Bike Path
  • Bollards will be installed where the bike path connects to the baseball field path and where the bike path meets the path behind the residence hall.
  • Baseball Field
  • The college received a letter from Councilor O’Keefe regarding outstanding baseball field concerns (see attached).
  • Signage for baseball field and tennis court parking will be posted in the location of the commuter spaces on Central Campus. Temporary signage stating “Commuter/Ballpark Parking” will be posted on September 16 until permanent signs are in place. There will be approximately 20 spaces dedicated in this lot.
  • During the fall season the baseball field will be used for practice only. There will be no formal games played on the field during the fall semester.
  • In the spring, signage directing fans, visiting teams and referees to the Central Campus parking spaces will be in place at the Loring Avenue entrances. The Athletics Department will send opponents and referees parking instructions prior to games played.
  • Concerns regarding baseball field parking on Monroe Road were raised. Consideration for residential parking will be discussed between the neighbors, Councilor O’Keefe and Salem Police.
  • The location of the main path to the baseball field was questioned. It was thought that the path would be located in right field, although it is currently located in left.

NEW BUSINESS

  • Pacific Street Lot
  • Neighbors expressed concern about head-in parking in this lot. The college has proposed the spaces be re-lined for angled parking. Councilor Veno will speak to neighbors and work with the college to resolve.
  • Residence Hall Updates
  • The most recent public meeting took place on August 26. The next public meeting will take place at the end of October. There is much debate on the proposed wall between the residence hall and the bike path. The constituencies are divided on this issue: the bike path contingent relayed concerns of safety with a wall in place, and neighbors relayed concern for screening without a wall in place. The college asks the city to involve the Bike Path Committee in this discussion.
  • The time for trash pickup has been changed from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. to mitigate neighbor concerns stated in the first public meeting for the residence hall.
  • Neighbor concern regarding the light from the tower in the current residence hall has been addressed with the installation of automatic shades on the backside of the building to prevent the light from shining into neighbors’ windows after dark.
  • The link rendering and media advisory for the new residence hall can be found at: http://www.salemstate.edu/collegerelations/news/2008/index.php?num=1009
  • New Concerns
  • Students have been jumping off the wall behind the O’Keefe Center near the softball field. There is concern that someone will be hurt.
  • Neighbors would like a target date for the completion of the Press Box/Bathrooms on the baseball field.
  • Concern regarding fly balls on the bike path was raised. The college stated that there is signage in place to warn bike path patrons to be cautious while the field is in use.

MEETING SCHEDULE

The next meeting of the SSCNAC will take place on Monday, October 20 at 5:30 in the Enterprise Center Training Room B located on Central Campus at 121 Loring Avenue.
